Europe Day

Europe Day originates from the Schuman Declaration, proposed by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman on May 9, 1950. This landmark proposal called for pooling coal and steel production between France and West Germany, laying the foundation for the European Coal and Steel Community—the precursor to the European Union. Luxembourg, as one of the six founding members alongside Belgium, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and West Germany, played a crucial role in early European integration. The declaration was inspired by the desire to prevent future wars and foster lasting peace through economic interdependence, a vision strongly supported by Luxembourg's leaders, notably Prime Minister Joseph Bech, who was a key signatory of the Treaty of Paris in 1951. In 1985, the European Council officially designated May 9 as Europe Day to celebrate the birth of the European project.
