Origin & history
All Souls' Day in Lithuania has deep roots in pre-Christian Baltic traditions of honoring the dead, particularly during the autumn equinox when the veil between the living and the dead was believed to be thinnest. After Lithuania's Christianization in the 14th century, the Catholic Church integrated these customs into All Souls' Day (November 2), following All Saints' Day. The holiday became a time for families to gather and pray for the souls of the departed, blending ancient rituals with Christian doctrine.
The Soviet occupation suppressed religious observances, yet Vėlinės persisted as a cultural and family tradition. Since independence in 1990, the holiday has been widely celebrated, reaffirming its importance in Lithuanian identity.
Customs & traditions
On All Souls' Day, families visit cemeteries to clean and decorate graves with flowers, especially chrysanthemums, and colored candles. The evening before, candles are lit on graves, creating a sea of lights that symbolizes remembrance and hope for eternal life. It is customary to pray for the dead and read names of ancestors, and many attend special church masses.
Traditional foods include kūčiai (small biscuits with poppy seeds) and other dishes shared after cemetery visits, reflecting older harvest rituals. In some regions, people leave food on graves as offerings. The atmosphere is somber yet peaceful, emphasizing family bonds and continuity between generations.
