Africa Day traces its origins to May 25, 1963, when 32 African nations signed the Charter of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Lesotho, which gained independence in 1966, has observed this day as a public holiday to celebrate African unity and solidarity. Over time, Lesotho merged the observance with Heroes' Day to pay tribute to local historical figures, such as King Moshoeshoe I, who united the Basotho nation, and independence leaders like Ntsu Mokhehle and Chief Leabua Jonathan. The dual commemoration reflects Lesotho's pride in both Pan-Africanism and its own national heroes.
Customs & traditions
