Pentecost

Pentecost originates from the biblical event described in the Acts of the Apostles, when the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles in Jerusalem, 50 days after Easter. In Latvia, Christianity was introduced in the 12th and 13th centuries, and Pentecost became established as a major feast. The holiday was adopted alongside other Christian celebrations, but local customs blended with pre-Christian traditions celebrating the beginning of summer.

In Latvia, Pentecost (Vasarsvētki) is traditionally celebrated with church services, including the decoration of churches with green branches and flowers. Folk traditions include gathering medicinal herbs, as they are believed to have special powers on this day. People also engage in outdoor activities like singing and dancing, and it is common to make wreaths of oak leaves, which are hung on doors for protection. Traditional foods include dairy products like cheese and butter, as well as fresh bread and honey, symbolizing the abundance of summer.

Pentecost holds deep religious significance as the birth of the Christian church, celebrating the gift of the Holy Spirit. In Latvia, it also marks the beginning of summer festivities, blending Christian and pagan elements. The holiday reinforces community bonds through shared worship and the celebration of nature's renewal.
