Origin & history
Christmas was introduced to Jamaica by Spanish colonizers in the 1500s, who brought Catholicism with them. After the British took control in 1655, Anglican traditions blended with African customs brought by enslaved people. Over time, Christmas evolved into a blend of European religious practices and Afro-Jamaican cultural expressions, such as Jonkonnu (John Canoe), a masked street parade with roots in West African harvest festivals. The holiday was officially recognized as a public holiday during the colonial era and continued after independence in 1962.
Customs & traditions
Jamaican Christmas celebrations begin weeks ahead with 'Grand Market' on Christmas Eve, where streets fill with vendors selling toys, clothing, and food. On Christmas morning, many attend church services featuring carols and nativity plays. Families then gather for a large feast that includes traditional dishes like jerk pork, curried goat, rice and gungo peas, sorrel drink (hibiscus punch), and Christmas cake soaked in rum. Jonkonnu parades, once suppressed, have revived in some areas with dancers in elaborate costumes, stilt walkers, and musicians playing drums and bamboo instruments.

For most Jamaicans, Christmas is both a religious celebration of Christ's birth and a cultural festival emphasizing family, community, and generosity. It is a time to reconnect with loved ones, share food and gifts, and honor African heritage through music and dance.
