Origin & history
The Isle of Man TT races originated in 1907 when the first Isle of Man Tourist Trophy motorcycle race was organized by the Auto-Cycle Club (later the Auto-Cycle Union) as a result of the British government banning racing on public roads. The event quickly grew in popularity, with the Senior TT class introduced in 1911 and becoming the premier event of the TT meeting. Senior Race Day specifically refers to the final race day, usually held on the last Saturday of the TT fortnight, featuring the Senior TT race — the fastest and most famous race of the week.
Customs & traditions
On Senior Race Day, thousands of spectators line the 37.73-mile Snaefell Mountain Course, camping out at famous spots like the Creg-ny-Baa, Ballaugh Bridge, and the Mountain Box. Fans include dedicated bikers, tourists, and locals who often start celebrating early with parades, live music, and street parties in Douglas and other towns. Food traditions include enjoying traditional Manx fare such as queenies (local scallops), kippers, and manx pasties, alongside festival staples like burgers and chips. The day culminates in the six-lap Senior TT race, after which a podium ceremony honors the winner, often followed by fireworks and continued festivities.
