Origin & history
Pancasila Day originates from June 1, 1945, when Indonesia's founding father, Sukarno, delivered a speech outlining the five principles that would become the nation's philosophical foundation. This occurred during the session of the Investigating Committee for Preparatory Work for Indonesian Independence (BPUPKI), held from May 28 to June 1, 1945. In his speech, titled 'The Birth of Pancasila,' Sukarno proposed five principles: nationalism, internationalism (humanitarianism), democracy (consultation/consensus), social justice, and belief in God. After revisions, the final version was enshrined in the Preamble of the 1945 Constitution.
Initially, Pancasila Day was not a public holiday. It was officially designated as a national holiday in 2016 by President Joko Widodo through Presidential Decree No. 24 of 2016, to reinforce the ideology's role in uniting Indonesia's diverse society. The holiday honors Sukarno's address and the historical moment when Pancasila was first articulated.
Customs & traditions
Pancasila Day is observed with flag-raising ceremonies and official events across Indonesia. Government offices, schools, and universities hold commemorative ceremonies featuring the raising of the red-and-white national flag while singing the national anthem 'Indonesia Raya.' Dignitaries and officials often deliver speeches emphasizing Pancasila's values, and public officials may lead pledges to uphold the principles.
In schools, students participate in educational activities such as essay competitions, art contests, and discussions about Pancasila's meaning.
