In Indonesia, the holiday was introduced by European colonizers, particularly the Portuguese and Dutch, who brought Christianity to the archipelago. The Dutch East India Company (VOC) established Protestant churches, and later Catholic missions expanded the observance. After independence, the Indonesian government recognized Good Friday as a national holiday to respect the Christian minority, reflecting the country's Pancasila ideology of religious tolerance.
