Pork is also favored over poultry, as eating chicken or fish might 'fly away' or 'swim away' one's luck. Many people avoid consuming poultry to prevent their luck from escaping. Another custom is making a loud noise, such as firecrackers or popping champagne corks, to scare away evil spirits. Families gather for a festive meal, often consisting of roast pork, stuffed cabbage, and a rich cake like bejgli (a poppy seed or walnut roll). In the evening, many attend concerts or public fireworks displays, especially in cities like Budapest.
