Good Friday

Good Friday has been observed in Hungary since the Christianization of the Magyars under King Stephen I in the 11th century. The holiday marks the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ, a central event in Christian theology. Hungary's Catholic and Protestant traditions both emphasize mourning and reflection on this day, with roots in medieval liturgical practices. Historically, a superstition held that washing clothes on Good Friday would bring bad luck, and some still refrain from laundry. In recent years, the holiday has also become a day for family gatherings and a long weekend break.
