Columbus Day in Honduras, known as Día del Descubrimiento de América or Día de la Raza, originates from the arrival of Christopher Columbus on the shores of the Bay Islands on August 15, 1502, during his fourth voyage. Columbus named the island Guanaja, and this event marked the first European contact with Honduran territory. The holiday was established to honor the meeting of European and indigenous cultures.
