Flag and Universities Day traces its origins to the Haitian Revolution. On May 18, 1803, at the Congress of Arcahaie, revolutionary leader Jean-Jacques Dessalines created the Haitian flag by ripping the white band from the French tricolor, symbolizing the rejection of white colonial rule and the unity of Black and mixed-race Haitians. The flag became a powerful emblem of the struggle for independence, which was achieved on January 1, 1804. The day also honors universities, as education has been central to Haiti's identity since independence, with institutions like the University of Haiti (founded 1944) playing key roles in nation-building.
