Easter Sunday in Haiti traces its roots to the arrival of Christianity with European colonizers, primarily the French, who brought Roman Catholicism to the island in the 16th and 17th centuries. The holiday became deeply ingrained during the colonial period, as enslaved Africans were forced to convert to Christianity. However, they secretly incorporated African spiritual elements into the celebrations, blending Catholic and Vodou traditions. After the Haitian Revolution (1791–1804), which established Haiti as the first independent Black republic, the Catholic Church remained dominant, and Easter became a national holiday symbolizing both Christian resurrection and the rebirth of the nation from slavery and oppression.
