Discovery Day marks the arrival of Christopher Columbus on the island of Hispaniola, which today comprises Haiti and the Dominican Republic. On December 5, 1492, during his first voyage, Columbus sighted the island and named it Hispaniola. He established the first European settlement, La Navidad, near present-day Cap-Haïtien. This event initiated European colonization and the eventual enslavement and decimation of the indigenous Taino population. The holiday was instituted during the colonial period under French rule and continued after independence, serving as a complex reminder of the country's colonial past.
