Good Friday has been observed in Guatemala since the Spanish colonization in the 16th century. Catholic missionaries introduced the Passion plays and processions to convert indigenous Maya populations, blending European traditions with local customs. Over centuries, it evolved into one of the most significant religious events in the country.
Customs & traditions
On Good Friday, Guatemalans participate in massive processions featuring floats (andas) bearing statues of Christ and the Virgin Mary, carried by devotees in purple or black tunics. Streets are adorned with colorful sawdust and flower carpets (alfombras) depicting religious scenes, created overnight. Many families prepare traditional foods like bacalao (salted cod) and torrejas (fried bread in syrup). In Antigua Guatemala, the processions are particularly famous for their grandeur and artistic alfombras.
Why it is celebrated
Good Friday is the culmination of Holy Week (Semana Santa) and commemorates Jesus' sacrifice for humanity's sins. For Guatemalans, it is a day of mourning, reflection, and penance, reinforcing communal faith and cultural identity. The blend of Catholic and indigenous elements underscores the unique syncretism of Guatemalan spirituality.
