Holy Saturday, known as Sábado de Gloria in Guatemala, traces its origins to the early Catholic traditions brought by Spanish colonizers in the 16th century. The day commemorates the time Jesus Christ lay in the tomb after his crucifixion, a period of waiting and mourning before the resurrection. In Guatemala, the observance was heavily influenced by Medieval Spanish Passion plays and later syncretized with indigenous Maya customs, creating a unique blend of Catholic and local elements.

Guatemalans observe Holy Saturday with a mix of quiet reflection and vibrant communal rituals. In the morning, many attend the Blessing of the Fire and Water ceremony, where priests bless a new fire and holy water for use in Easter baptisms. Streets are often decorated with elaborate alfombras (carpets) made of colored sawdust, flowers, and fruits, which processions will walk over later. A unique custom is the quema del diablo (burning of the devil) or quema de Judas, where effigies of Judas Iscariot are filled with fireworks and burned in public squares, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. Families typically prepare traditional foods like fiambre (a cold salad of meats, vegetables, and cheeses) and torrejas (fried bread soaked in honey or syrup), though the main feast is reserved for Easter Sunday.
