Origin & history
Christmas Day in Grenada has its roots in the country's colonial history and Christian heritage. Introduced by European colonizers, primarily the French and later the British, the celebration of Christmas became embedded in Grenadian culture. The French brought Catholicism, while the British introduced Anglican and other Protestant traditions, all of which influenced the observance of Christmas. In Grenada, Christmas celebrations begin weeks in advance with church services, caroling, and community events. Families decorate their homes with lights, nativity scenes, and Christmas trees. On Christmas Eve, many attend Midnight Mass or other church services, followed by a festive meal that often includes traditional dishes such as black cake (a rum-soaked fruitcake), sorrel drink, and ham or roast pork. Gift-giving is common, and children eagerly await presents from 'Santa Claus' or 'Father Christmas'.
On Christmas Day, families gather for a large feast, often featuring local specialties like oil down (a one-pot dish with breadfruit, saltfish, and dumplings). Music and dancing are integral, with calypso, soca, and parang (Caribbean folk music) filling the air. Communities also hold street parties and parades, and many Grenadians visit friends and relatives to share food and goodwill. The holiday season extends to Boxing Day (December 26), another public holiday for relaxation and further celebrations.
