Origin & history
Grenada's Carnival traces its roots to French settlers in the 18th century, who brought pre-Lenten masquerade balls and festivities. Following the British takeover, the tradition evolved but was suppressed after emancipation. After a brief hiatus, it was revived as 'Spicemas' in the 1980s, moving to August to coincide with the island's independence celebrations and to avoid the hurricane season. This shift also aligned with the desire to create a unique Grenadian identity separate from Trinidad's Carnival.
Customs & traditions
Key events include 'Jab Jab' (a mock devil character), 'Fancy Dress' masquerade, and 'Pretty Mas' bands adorned in elaborate costumes. Competitions such as Calypso Monarch, Soca Monarch, and Panorama steelpan finals are highlights. Traditional foods like oil down (a one-pot stew with breadfruit, salted meat, and coconut milk) are enjoyed during street parties and J'Ouvert morning celebrations, where revelers cover themselves in paint, mud, and chocolate.
