Origin & history
Christmas was introduced to Greenland by Norse settlers around the 10th century, but the modern celebration stems from the arrival of Danish missionaries in the 18th century. In 1721, the Lutheran missionary Hans Egede began Christianizing the Inuit population, bringing with him Danish Christmas traditions. Over time, these merged with local customs, such as drum dancing and storytelling, to create a unique Greenlandic Christmas. Greenland's remote settlements and harsh winter conditions shaped the holiday: Christmas became a time of community warmth and sharing, essential for survival during the long, dark polar nights.
Customs & traditions
Greenlandic Christmas celebrations begin on December 24 with the main feast, after attending church services. Families gather for a meal that often includes 'suaasat' (a traditional meat soup of seal, whale, or reindeer), as well as Danish-influenced dishes like roast pork, duck, and rice pudding with a hidden almond for good luck. Homes are decorated with Christmas trees, lights, and paper stars. Gift-giving is common, with presents often brought by a seasonal figure derived from the Danish 'Julemanden'. Many communities hold church services in the local Greenlandic language.

Christmas Day in Greenland is both a religious commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ and a cultural occasion that reinforces family and community bonds. For many Greenlanders, it is a rare opportunity to slow down from the demands of Arctic life, to share traditional foods, and to pass on cultural heritage through carols, stories, and the blending of Danish and Inuit customs. It also serves as a midwinter festival of light and hope during the darkest time of the year.
