Pentecost (Greek: Πεντηκοστή) has its roots in the Jewish festival of Shavuot, occurring fifty days after Passover. For Christians, it marks the event recorded in the Acts of the Apostles (2:1–31) when the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles in Jerusalem, enabling them to speak in tongues. This day is considered the birth of the Christian Church.
