Labour Day in Greece traces its origins to the international labor movement and the Haymarket affair in Chicago in 1886. In Greece, the first May Day celebrations occurred in the 1890s, organized by socialist and labor groups. The day became associated with workers' demands for an eight-hour workday and better conditions. During the 20th century, Labour Day was an occasion for strikes and demonstrations, often clashing with authorities, especially during the military junta (1967-1974) when it was suppressed. After the restoration of democracy, May 1st was officially recognized as a public holiday, reaffirming its importance in Greek society.

Greeks celebrate Labour Day with a mix of political activism and spring festivities. Major cities, especially Athens and Thessaloniki, see large demonstrations organized by labor unions and leftist parties, with parades, speeches, and rallies advocating for workers' rights. Many people also take to the countryside for picnics, enjoying the May Day holiday as a spring outing. A distinctive custom is the 'May wreath' (Πρωτομαγιάτικο στεφάνι), made from wildflowers and hung on doors until June 24 (the Feast of the Nativity of John the Baptist), when it is burned in bonfires. Traditional foods include grilled meats, salads, and seasonal dishes like artichokes and fava beans.
