Commonwealth Day

Commonwealth Day originated in the early 20th century as Empire Day, a celebration of the British Empire. It was established in 1904 by Reginald Brabazon, 12th Earl of Meath, to instill pride in the empire among schoolchildren. After the decline of the empire, the day was renamed Commonwealth Day in 1958 and moved to the second Monday in March in 1977 to avoid conflicting with other holidays.

In Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory, Commonwealth Day has been observed since the early 20th century, reflecting its close ties to the United Kingdom. The British colonial influence is evident in the observance, with elements like the singing of 'God Save the King' and the display of the Union Jack alongside Commonwealth flags.
