Christmas in Gibraltar dates back to the 18th century when the British established control over the territory in 1704. The British garrison and settlers brought Anglican and other Protestant traditions, while the native Gibraltarians, predominantly Roman Catholic, maintained Spanish-influenced customs. Over time, the holiday evolved into a fusion of British and Mediterranean practices, reflecting Gibraltar's diverse cultural heritage. The earliest recorded celebrations included midnight Mass at the Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned and communal feasts among the garrison.
Customs & traditions
Gibraltarians celebrate Christmas with a mix of British and local traditions. Homes are decorated with Christmas trees and lights, and nativity scenes ('belenes') are common. On Christmas Eve, many attend midnight Mass, followed by a family dinner featuring local dishes such as 'calentita' (a chickpea flour pancake), 'pan dulce' (sweet bread), and roasted meats. On Christmas Day, families exchange gifts and enjoy a large midday meal, often including turkey or pork, with desserts like 'turrón' (almond nougat) and 'pastel de carne' (meat pie).
Another unique tradition is the 'Christmas Fair' at the Grand Casemates Square, offering rides, food stalls, and entertainment. The Gibraltar Philharmonic Society and other groups organize concerts, including carol singing in both English and Spanish. The streets are adorned with festive lights, and the Rock of Gibraltar is often illuminated with a giant star.
