Farmers' Day

Farmers' Day was established in 1985 by the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) government under Jerry Rawlings. The holiday was created to recognize the essential role of farmers and fishers in Ghana's development, particularly after a period of economic decline and food shortages. The first celebration was held in 1988 in Sekondi-Takoradi. The holiday was initially observed on the first Friday of December, which aligns with the end of the main harvest season, making it a fitting time to give thanks for the bounty of the land. Over time, the day has evolved into a major national event, with awards presented to outstanding farmers and fishers at district, regional, and national levels.

The main tradition on Farmers' Day is the National Farmers' and Fishers' Awards Ceremony, held in a different region each year. During the ceremony, the President of Ghana presents prizes, including tractors, cash, and other agricultural inputs, to exemplary farmers and fishers. Communities across the country organize local celebrations with parades, cultural displays, and agricultural exhibitions. Families and friends gather to share meals featuring traditional Ghanaian dishes such as fufu, banku, jollof rice, and grilled fish, often using freshly harvested produce. It is also a time for farmers to rest and reflect on their work, while urban dwellers may visit rural areas to appreciate farming life.
