Constitution Day in Ghana marks the anniversary of the 1992 Constitution, which was approved by a national referendum held on April 28, 1992. Following nearly two decades of military coups and political instability, the constitution established Ghana as a democratic republic with a multiparty system, separation of powers, and protection of fundamental human rights. It was drafted by a Consultative Assembly representing various sectors of society, including traditional leaders, political parties, and civil society. The referendum saw a 92% approval rate, paving the way for the 1992 presidential and parliamentary elections that ended the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) rule led by Jerry Rawlings. The constitution officially came into force on January 7, 1993, but the date of its approval is celebrated as Constitution Day.
