Origin & history
Founders Day was established in Ghana by the Presidential Transition Act of 2019, which replaced the previous holiday of Republic Day (July 1) with Founders Day on August 4. The change was made to honor the collective efforts of the country's founding fathers, including those who formed the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) in 1947, a key step toward independence. August 4 was chosen because it marks the founding of the UGCC and also commemorates the formation of the Aborigines' Rights Protection Society in 1897, an early nationalist movement. The holiday was first observed on August 4, 2019, under President Nana Akufo-Addo's administration, as a way to celebrate all contributors to Ghana's independence, rather than focusing on a single leader like Kwame Nkrumah.
Customs & traditions
Founders Day is observed with official ceremonies, including a national parade and speeches by political leaders, often at Independence Square in Accra. The president typically lays a wreath at the mausoleum of Kwame Nkrumah or other memorials for the founders. Across the country, schools and communities hold commemorative events such as lectures, cultural performances, and exhibitions highlighting Ghana's history. As a public holiday, many families take the day off to relax or gather for meals, featuring traditional Ghanaian dishes like jollof rice, fufu, and banku. Some Ghanaians also engage in volunteer activities or visit historical sites to honor the founders' legacy.
Why it is celebrated

It replaces the earlier practice of singling out Kwame Nkrumah on his birthday (September 21) with a broader recognition of the founding fathers, including figures like J.B.
