75th anniversary of the uprising of June 17, 1953

On June 17, 1953, a peaceful protest by construction workers in East Berlin escalated into a nationwide uprising against the German Democratic Republic (GDR) government. Protesters demanded political reforms, free elections, and the resignation of the government. The revolt spread to over 700 towns and cities, involving an estimated one million people. However, Soviet troops and East German police violently suppressed the uprising, resulting in dozens of deaths and thousands of arrests.
