Epiphany

Germany · Date: Monday, January 6, 2025

Epiphany, celebrated on January 6, marks the visit of the Three Wise Men to the infant Jesus. In Germany, it is a public holiday in several states and is associated with house blessing and charity traditions.

Origin & history

Epiphany, also known as Twelfth Night or Three Kings' Day, commemorates the biblical adoration of the baby Jesus by the Magi. In Germany, the holiday has been observed since the early Middle Ages, with the first documented celebrations in the 4th century. It became established as a church festival by the 8th century, and in 1970 it was recognized as a public holiday in some German states. The tradition of 'Sternsinger' (star singers) dates back to the 16th century, rooted in the custom of children going door-to-door to collect donations and sing carols.

Customs & traditions

On Epiphany, children dress up as the Three Wise Men and go from house to house singing carols, a practice known as 'Sternsingen'. They write the year and the initials C+M+B (for the legendary names Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar, or the Latin phrase 'Christus mansionem benedicat' meaning 'Christ bless this house') over the door with chalk. This is believed to protect the home for the coming year. Families often enjoy a special meal, such as roast goose or a king cake (Dreikönigskuchen) containing a hidden figurine; the one who finds it becomes the 'king' for the day. In some regions, there are processions and church services featuring the blessing of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Why it is celebrated

Epiphany is celebrated as the final day of the Christmas season and a time to reflect on the revelation of God to humanity through the Magi. For German Christians, it emphasizes the universality of Christ's message, as the Wise Men represented the gentile nations. The custom of 'Sternsingen' also has a charitable aspect, raising money for children's aid organizations worldwide, blending religious tradition with social action.
