Origin & history
The first Independence Day commemorates May 26, 1918, when the Democratic Republic of Georgia declared independence from the Russian Empire after the Russian Revolution. This republic was short-lived, as the Red Army invaded in 1921, leading to Soviet annexation. For 70 years, Georgia was part of the USSR, and the holiday was suppressed.
On April 9, 1991, Georgia declared independence from the Soviet Union, following a referendum where over 99% voted for sovereignty. The formal restoration of independence was recognized later that year, and since then, May 26 has been celebrated as Independence Day, honoring both the 1918 declaration and the 1991 restoration.
Customs & traditions
The day begins with an official ceremony at the Freedom Square in Tbilisi, featuring a military parade, speeches by government officials, and the president awarding national medals. The parade showcases Georgian armed forces, police, and other uniformed services, followed by a flyover of military aircraft.
Families and friends gather for picnics and barbecues, often grilling shashlik (skewered meat) and eating traditional dishes like khachapuri (cheese bread) and khinkali (dumplings). Many people dress in traditional Georgian attire or wear the national flag as a scarf. In the capital and other cities, concerts, folk dance performances, and fireworks continue into the night.
