Mother's Day in Georgia was officially established on March 3, 1991, shortly after the country's independence from the Soviet Union. The initiative came from the first President of Georgia, Zviad Gamsakhurdia, who sought to create a distinct holiday to honor mothers, separate from the Soviet-era International Women's Day on March 8. The date was chosen to coincide with the celebration of the Annunciation of the Theotokos in the Georgian Orthodox Church, symbolizing reverence for motherhood. Over time, the holiday gained popularity and became a fixed part of Georgia's festive calendar, officially recognized as a non-working day.
