The Day of Svetitskhoveli Cathedral traces its origins to the early 4th century when King Mirian III of Kartli (Iberia) declared Christianity as the state religion of Georgia. According to tradition, after Saint Nino, a Cappadocian missionary, converted the royal family, she revealed that the sacred robe of Jesus Christ was buried in the Mtskheta region. A wooden church was built on the site, and later, in the 11th century, King Bagrat III commissioned the current stone cathedral, which was completed in 1029 under the direction of architect Arsukidze. The holiday celebrates the cathedral's construction and its role as a spiritual center. It is observed on October 14 (Julian calendar) or October 27 (Gregorian calendar).
