National Unity Day traces its origins to the tragic events of April 9, 1989, when Soviet troops violently suppressed a peaceful pro-independence demonstration in Tbilisi. The protest, which began on April 4, demanded Georgia’s secession from the Soviet Union and was part of the broader national liberation movement. On the night of April 9, Soviet soldiers used sharpened shovels, tear gas, and toxic chemicals against unarmed demonstrators, resulting in 21 deaths and hundreds of injuries. This massacre galvanized Georgian society and accelerated the push for independence, which was ultimately achieved in 1991. In 1991, the Georgian government declared April 9 as a national holiday to honor the victims and celebrate the nation's unity in the struggle for freedom. The holiday was officially named 'National Unity Day' in 2007 to emphasize solidarity and remembrance.

National Unity Day is observed with official ceremonies at the Heroes' Square in Tbilisi, where government officials, including the president and prime minister, lay wreaths at the memorial dedicated to the April 9 victims. A moment of silence is held at 11:00 AM to honor the fallen. Schools and public institutions organize educational programs about the events of 1989, and political parties often hold rallies or conferences. In the evening, many Georgians attend candlelight vigils or concerts featuring patriotic music. Traditional Georgian foods such as khachapuri (cheese bread) and khinkali (dumplings) are commonly prepared for family gatherings, though the day is more focused on remembrance than festive celebration. Some people visit churches to light candles for the souls of the martyrs.
