Origin & history
Christmas, commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, was introduced to Gabon by French Catholic missionaries in the 19th century during the colonial period. The first missions, established in the 1840s along the coast, spread Christianity inland, and Christmas became an official public holiday. Over time, it integrated with existing Gabonese customs, particularly in urban areas like Libreville. The holiday reflects the country's history as a former French colony and the strong influence of the Catholic Church, although Protestant and independent churches also celebrate it widely.
Customs & traditions
Gabonese families attend midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, known as 'Messe de Minuit,' often followed by feasting and gift-giving. Popular dishes include chicken or fish with plantains, rice, and vegetables, along with local specialties like manioc and beignets. In rural areas, communities gather for dancing and storytelling. Exchanging gifts is common, but the focus remains on religious observance and strengthening family bonds. Many also participate in charitable acts, donating food or clothes to the needy.
