Christmas in El Salvador traces its origins to the Spanish colonization in the 16th century when Catholic missionaries introduced Christianity to the indigenous populations. The first Christmas Masses were held by Spanish priests, and the holiday gradually became a cornerstone of Salvadoran culture, influenced by both European customs and local adaptations.

Salvadorans celebrate Christmas with a mix of religious and festive traditions. On Christmas Eve (Nochebuena), families gather for a large dinner that typically includes tamales, roasted pork (pierna de cerdo), rice, and sweet bread (pan dulce). After dinner, many attend the Misa del Gallo (Midnight Mass) at local churches. Fireworks and sparklers light up the sky at midnight, and children receive gifts, often from the Niño Dios (Baby Jesus) rather than Santa Claus. Homes are decorated with Christmas trees, nativity scenes (nacimientos), and lights, with the nativity often being the centerpiece. On Christmas Day, families visit relatives and enjoy leftovers from the previous night's feast. Traditional drinks include horchata, atol de elote (corn porridge), and coffee.
