Father's Day

Father's Day in El Salvador, like in many countries, was influenced by the global movement to recognize fathers. The holiday's modern form emerged in the early 20th century, inspired by the success of Mother's Day. In 1910, Sonora Smart Dodd in the United States proposed a day to honor fathers, leading to the first Father's Day celebration in 1910. The idea spread internationally, and El Salvador adopted its own date, June 17, to coincide with the feast day of Saint Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus Christ. The Salvadoran government officially recognized Father's Day in the mid-20th century, and it has since become a significant national observance.

Salvadorans celebrate Father's Day primarily with family gatherings. Children prepare handmade cards, gifts, or purchase items like ties, shirts, or tools for their fathers. Many families enjoy a special meal together, often featuring traditional dishes such as pupusas (stuffed corn tortillas), grilled meats, and tamales. Some communities organize events like soccer tournaments or concerts where fathers are honored. In schools, children often participate in activities to create presents and perform songs or skits. It is a day for expressing gratitude, and many take the opportunity to visit their fathers or grandfathers, sharing quality time and creating lasting memories.
