Origin & history
The celebration of New Year's Day in Ecuador, as in many countries, originates from the adoption of the Gregorian calendar in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII, replacing the Julian calendar. In Ecuador, Spanish colonial rule introduced Catholic traditions that blended with indigenous Andean solstice celebrations, which marked the end of the harvest cycle and the start of a new agricultural year. Over time, these merged into the modern New Year's festivities.
Customs & traditions
Ecuadorians celebrate New Year's Eve (December 31) with elaborate traditions. A key custom is the burning of 'años viejos' (old years) – life-sized effigies made of paper, sawdust, or old clothes representing the outgoing year, often caricaturing politicians, celebrities, or personal grievances. These are burned at midnight to symbolically destroy the past and welcome the new year. People also walk around the block with a suitcase to ensure travel opportunities, and wear yellow underwear for luck, red for love, or white for peace. At midnight, 12 grapes are eaten with each bell toll, making wishes for the 12 months. Fireworks and loud music fill the streets. Families gather for a feast that includes traditional dishes like 'hornado' (roast pork), 'llapingachos' (potato patties), and 'canelazo' (a warm spiced drink). On New Year's Day, January 1st, many attend mass and visit relatives.
