Kimbangu's Day commemorates the birth of Simon Kimbangu on April 6, 1887, in Nkamba, Belgian Congo (now DR Congo). Kimbangu was a spiritual leader who began a healing ministry in 1921, attracting thousands of followers. He preached a message of African Christian independence, challenging colonial and missionary authority. The Belgian colonial authorities viewed his growing influence as a threat, arrested him, and sentenced him to death, later commuting the sentence to life imprisonment. Kimbangu died in prison in 1951. Despite his death, his movement grew underground, and the Church of Jesus Christ on Earth through the Prophet Simon Kimbangu (Kimbanguist Church) was officially recognized in 1959. The holiday was established to honor his birth and his role in Congo's religious and cultural history.
Customs & traditions
On Kimbangu's Day, devout Kimbanguists attend special church services at temples and the holy city of Nkamba, considered the New Jerusalem. Services feature hymns, prayers, and sermons emphasizing Kimbangu's teachings of faith, healing, and moral living. The faithful often wear distinctive white and green garments, the colors of the Kimbanguist Church. In Nkamba, the celebration includes a pilgrimage, where thousands gather for communal worship, baptisms in the sacred water source, and processions. Families also gather for festive meals, often sharing traditional Congolese dishes such as fufu, saka-saka (cassava leaves), and grilled meat. The day is a public holiday, so government offices and many businesses are closed, allowing broader participation.
