Independence Day in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) marks the country's liberation from Belgian colonial rule on June 30, 1960. The path to independence was fraught with political unrest and nationalist movements, particularly after World War II. Key figures like Patrice Lumumba and Joseph Kasa-Vubu led the push for self-rule. The Belgian government, facing mounting pressure, reluctantly agreed to grant independence. On June 30, 1960, King Baudouin of Belgium attended the official ceremony in Léopoldville (now Kinshasa), where Lumumba delivered a famous speech condemning colonial atrocities. The day ended with the raising of the new Congolese flag, symbolizing sovereignty.

Celebrations across the DRC include official speeches by the President and government officials, often held at the Palais du Peuple in Kinshasa.
