Origin & history
Labour Day in Czechia originates from the international workers' movement of the late 19th century. The date May 1st was chosen to commemorate the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago, where workers protested for an eight-hour workday. In the Czech lands, the first Labour Day celebrations were organized by the Social Democratic Party in 1890, and the tradition continued under the First Czechoslovak Republic from 1918.
During the communist era (1948–1989), the holiday was heavily politicized with mandatory parades and state-sponsored demonstrations. After the Velvet Revolution in 1989, the holiday was stripped of its mandatory communist connotations, but it remained a public holiday. Today, it is recognized as a day for workers' rights and is also intertwined with the romantic traditions of May Day.
Customs & traditions
Traditionally, Czechs celebrate May 1st as a day of love and spring. Young people erect Maypoles (máje) in villages, and girls receive a kiss under a blooming cherry tree to ensure beauty and health for the coming year. This romantic custom is known as 'polibek pod rozkvetlým stromem'. Couples often visit parks or go on outings.
Labour Day itself is marked by political rallies organized by trade unions and left-wing parties, advocating for workers' rights. Many people enjoy a day off with family, having barbecues or spending time outdoors. While the parades are smaller and less militaristic than during the communist era, the holiday still carries a dual character: a celebration of labor and a celebration of love and spring.
