Origin & history
Christmas Eve in Czechia has roots in both Christian tradition and pre-Christian Slavic customs. The Christian celebration commemorates the eve of the birth of Jesus Christ, but many traditions also stem from ancient winter solstice rituals. The Czech name 'Štědrý den' (Generous Day) reflects the medieval practice of sharing food and gifts to ensure prosperity. Over time, the holiday evolved under Habsburg influence, blending Catholic practices with local folklore.
Customs & traditions
The day is observed with a strict fast until the evening meal, which traditionally includes fish soup, fried carp with potato salad, and vánočka (braided sweet bread). Families decorate the Christmas tree and exchange presents after dinner, believed to be brought by Ježíšek (the Christ Child). Other customs include cutting an apple crosswise to predict good luck, pouring lead to see future shapes, and placing a carp scale under plates for wealth. Many attend midnight Mass.
