Jan Hus Day marks the death of Jan Hus, a priest, philosopher, and reformer who was burned at the stake on July 6, 1415, for his teachings against the Catholic Church's practices, such as indulgences. Hus was a precursor to the Protestant Reformation, inspired by John Wycliffe, and his execution sparked the Hussite Wars (1419–1434). The holiday was first officially recognized in 1925 by the Czechoslovak government, emphasizing Hus's role in national identity and religious freedom.
The date was chosen to honor his martyrdom and to promote the values of truth and justice. After the Velvet Revolution in 1989, Jan Hus Day was re-established as a state holiday in 1990, replacing a communist-era celebration. It remains a day to remember Hus's contributions to Czech culture and history.
Customs & traditions
The main observances take place at the Jan Hus Memorial in Prague's Old Town Square, where politicians, religious leaders, and the public lay wreaths and hold speeches. The Hussite Church holds special services, and there are often concerts and exhibitions related to Hus's life and the Reformation period.
Many Czechs use the day as a summer holiday, spending time with family or traveling. Traditional foods may include grilled meats and seasonal produce, but no specific culinary customs are tied to the holiday. Some towns with Hussite history, such as Tábor, hold reenactments and festivals.
