Cyprus National Day

Cyprus National Day marks the anniversary of the island’s independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960. The path to independence was long and turbulent, characterized by the EOKA (National Organization of Cypriot Fighters) guerrilla campaign from 1955 to 1959, which aimed to end British rule and achieve enosis (union with Greece). The struggle led to the Zürich and London Agreements, establishing Cyprus as an independent republic with a power-sharing constitution between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities. The Republic of Cyprus was formally proclaimed on August 16, 1960, but the first celebration of Independence Day took place on October 1 that year, and the date has been observed as the national holiday ever since.

The day begins with an official flag-raising ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, attended by the President, government officials, and dignitaries. A major military parade is held in the capital, featuring the Cypriot National Guard, police, and veterans, along with displays of military equipment. Similar parades and celebrations take place in cities and towns across the island. Schools and communities organize cultural events, concerts, and exhibitions showcasing traditional music and dance. Many Cypriots decorate their homes and workplaces with the national flag (white with a copper-colored map of the island and olive branches). In the evening, fireworks light up the sky in Nicosia and other urban centers. Traditional Cypriot food, such as souvlaki, halloumi cheese, and meze platters, is enjoyed in family gatherings and public festivities.

Cyprus National Day is a symbol of national sovereignty, unity, and pride for Cypriots. It commemorates the end of colonial rule and the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus as an independent state. The holiday also serves as a reminder of the island’s complex history and the ongoing division between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, reinforcing the aspiration for a peaceful reunification.
