St. Stephen's Day (Synaxis of the Holy Protomartyr Stephen) commemorates Saint Stephen, a deacon in the early Christian church who was stoned to death in Jerusalem around AD 34, making him the first Christian martyr (protomartyr). The feast was established by the 5th century and is observed on December 26 in many Christian traditions, including Greek Orthodoxy. In Cyprus, the holiday has been observed since the Byzantine era, reflecting the island's deep Orthodox Christian heritage.
