Victory and Homeland Thanksgiving Day and the Day of Croatian defenders

The holiday originates from Operation Storm (Oluja), the decisive Croatian military offensive in August 1995 during the Croatian War of Independence (1991–1995). Launched by the Croatian Army and police, the operation aimed to reclaim territories held by rebel Serb forces, including the Knin region, which was the self-proclaimed capital of the Republic of Serbian Krajina. On August 5, 1995, Croatian forces raised the national flag over the Knin Fortress, symbolizing the liberation of occupied land and effectively ending the war for independence. The date was formally declared a national holiday in 2002, combining the celebration of victory with thanksgiving to God and remembrance of Croatian defenders who died in the war.

The day begins with official state ceremonies, including a central commemoration at the Knin Fortress attended by the president, prime minister, and other dignitaries. A Mass is held for fallen soldiers, followed by the raising of the Croatian flag and a military parade showcasing the armed forces. In many towns, particularly in the Dalmatian hinterland, there are wreath-laying ceremonies at war memorials and cemeteries. Veterans' associations organize gatherings, and families of fallen defenders often hold private remembrances. In the evening, concerts and cultural events take place, with patriotic songs and folk music. Traditional foods served include roasted lamb, grilled meats, and local wines, especially in the Dalmatian region. The Croatian flag is widely displayed on homes and public buildings.
