Origin & history
Costa Rica's Independence Day commemorates the signing of the Act of Independence in 1821, which ended Spanish colonial rule. However, news of independence did not reach Costa Rica until October 13, 1821, when a messenger arrived from Guatemala. The date September 15 was chosen because it aligns with the independence of other Central American countries, as Costa Rica was part of the Captaincy General of Guatemala. The process was relatively peaceful, and Costa Rica later joined the Federal Republic of Central America before becoming fully sovereign in 1838.
Customs & traditions
Celebrations begin on the evening of September 14 with the 'Fiesta de la Independencia,' featuring fireworks, concerts, and the traditional 'Faroles' (lanterns) parade, where children carry handmade lanterns through the streets. At 6:00 PM, the national anthem is played, and the presidential address is broadcast. On September 15, the main event is the 'Desfile de Faroles' in the capital, San José, followed by school marching bands, folk dances, and parades throughout the country. Traditional foods include 'gallo pinto' (rice and beans), tamales, and 'agua dulce' (sugarcane drink). Many families also participate in races, rodeos, and cultural fairs.
