Christmas in Colombia originated with Spanish colonization in the 16th century. Catholic missionaries introduced the celebration of the Nativity, merging European practices with indigenous and African influences. Over centuries, Colombia developed its own distinct Christmas traditions, rooted in Catholic faith but shaped by local culture.
Customs & traditions
Colombians celebrate with a month-long season starting on December 7 (Día de las Velitas) when families light candles in honor of the Immaculate Conception. The Novena de Aguinaldos, nine days of prayers and family gatherings from December 16 to 24, is a central tradition featuring carols, games, and special foods. On Christmas Eve (Nochebuena), families attend Midnight Mass (Misa de Gallo) and then share a feast including lechona (stuffed pork), tamales, buñuelos (cheese fritters), and natilla (custard). Gifts are opened at midnight, and Christmas Day is spent with family, often with more food and relaxation.

Christmas Day is the culmination of Advent and the celebration of the birth of Jesus. For Colombians, it is a time for family unity, religious devotion, and cultural expression, reflecting the country's strong Catholic heritage and communal values.
