Origin & history
The origin of Our Lady of Chiquinquirá Day dates back to the 16th century in the town of Chiquinquirá, Boyacá. According to tradition, a small image of the Virgin Mary painted on a cotton cloth was left neglected in a chapel and became faded and torn. In 1586, after a series of miraculous events, the image was restored and appeared radiant, leading to widespread devotion. The miracle was recognized by the Catholic Church, and the Virgin of Chiquinquirá was declared the patroness of Colombia in 1919 by Pope Benedict XV. The day commemorates the canonical coronation of the image, which took place on July 9, 1919.
Customs & traditions
On Our Lady of Chiquinquirá Day, thousands of pilgrims travel to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary in Chiquinquirá, the main sanctuary. The celebration includes solemn masses, processions with the image through the streets, and traditional dances such as the bambuco. Fireworks, music, and local food like tamales, arepas, and cholados (shaved ice desserts) are common. In other cities, such as Bogotá, cathedrals hold special services, and many Colombians attend church or gather with family for a festive meal.
