Origin & history
The Battle of Boyacá took place on August 7, 1819, near the Teatinos River in the Boyacá department. It was the culminating battle of the Colombian War of Independence, part of the larger Spanish American wars of independence. The republican army, led by Simón Bolívar and Francisco de Paula Santander, ambushed and defeated the larger Spanish royalist forces commanded by Colonel José María Barreiro. The victory effectively ended Spanish control over New Granada, leading to the liberation of Bogotá and the establishment of the Republic of Gran Colombia. The battle is considered a masterstroke of military strategy, as Bolívar's army crossed the Andes through harsh conditions to surprise the Spanish.
