After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the government officially designated May 1 as Labour Day, making it a public holiday to celebrate the achievements of the working class under socialist policies. The holiday was initially marked with grand parades and mass gatherings, but since 2000, the government has reduced the official holiday duration and shifted focus to domestic tourism and consumption.

Traditionally, Labour Day in China was celebrated with large parades, rallies, and awards ceremonies honoring model workers. In recent decades, the customs have evolved. The holiday period, often extended into a 'Golden Week' (though now typically a three-day break), sees many Chinese citizens traveling domestically or abroad, shopping in malls, and dining out.
