Christmas in Chile traces its roots to Spanish colonization in the 16th century, when Catholic missionaries introduced the celebration of the Nativity. The first Christmas Mass in Chile was held in 1541, shortly after the founding of Santiago by Pedro de Valdivia. Over centuries, the holiday evolved from a purely religious observance into a cultural event, incorporating indigenous and mestizo elements, such as the use of local foods and music. The Chilean tradition of celebrating on December 24th (Nochebuena) with a large family dinner and midnight Mass remains central, reflecting the Spanish heritage of the holiday.
